In Backwoods Witchcraft, Jake Richards offers up a folksy stew of family stories, lore, omens, rituals, and conjure crafts that he learned from his great-grandmother, his grandmother, and his grandfather, a Baptist minister who Jake remembers could "rid someone of a fever with an egg or stop up the blood in a wound." The witchcraft practiced in Appalachia is very much a folk magic of place, a tradition that honors the seen and unseen beings that inhabit the land as well as the soil, roots, and plant life.
The materials and tools used in Appalachia witchcraft are readily available from the land. This "grounded approach" will be of keen interest to witches and conjure folk regardless of where they live. Readers will be guided in how to build relationships with the spirits and other beings that dwell around them and how to use the materials and tools that are readily available on the land where one lives.
This book also provides instructions on how to create a working space and altar and make conjure oils and powders. A wide array of tried-and-true formulas are also offered for creating wealth, protecting one from gossip, spiritual cleansing, and more.
Perfect for newcomers, as well as experienced folk Coming from the coalfields of southern WV, I grew up with a lot of superstition from old timers I was around, especially my mamaw, who always talked about being a seventh child of a seventh child, or "had the veil over her eyes". Eventually, the stories, remedies, and knowledge was becoming lost with the death of the old folks that were passing it on, as times and values seemed to be changing. Over the years, I had looked around for good sources, and learned what I could, but much of what I found were new age hippie types, often outsiders to the region, selling lectures and promises on YouTube, and out of the back of metaphysical bookstores. I came in a bit skeptical, but after opening the book for the first time, I was hooked. The information is presented in a no nonsense way, and is straight to the point. Much of the information lined up with what I was told as a youngin, but also there were new things I hadn't heard of. The author also will tell you if something is personal practice and not passed on Information, which is very much appreciated. For the price, you can't beat it, as most books with Information like this is no less than $30. It's a fantastic edition to the library for anyone looking to get into the subject.Authentic Folk Magic Before I get to the book, let's talk about Allen's 1-star review.... Oh, Allen! I am amazed! I am utterly and completely amazed that someone who says he's been "practicing the Occult for about 15 years" obviously lacks any knowledge whatsoever about southern Conjure. Words like "Conjure" and "Appalachian Folk Magic", as well as "Hoodoo" (African American) and "Rootwork" refer to systems of folk magic that developed in the Southeastern United States and that are BASED IN CHRISTIANITY.....which includes the use of the Bible. (In fact, trying to take the Bible out of southern Conjure would be like trying to take the Charge of the Goddess and circle casting out of British Wicca -- it cannot be legitimately done....). I get that you're "not religious", but not all forms of witchcraft and magic are the Harry Potter/The Magicians/Charmed type. An open mind is a beautiful thing. And Allen, I suggest the next time you are "anticipating a book for quite some time", you may actually want to do some research on what that book is about (hint - read the subtitle. A subtitle of "Conjure & Folk Magic From Appalachia" should have given it away....) That way you can spare us all from spurious reviews complaining that a book on southern Christian folk magic is actually about.......................... wait for it ............................................... CHRISTIAN folk magic!!!!!! (Oh the horror! The shock!). I mean, using the BIBLE in magic! Scandalous! (Uh..... even though it's been done for hundreds of years....) If you buy a book on Conjure, it's going to be about Conjure...not about your artificial ideas of what "witchcraft" is. So Allen, in true Southern fashion I'd like to say: bless your little heart..... and your irrelevant review. Now on to the book.... being a refugee from the South myself, I thoroughly enjoyed it. This here book smacks of authenticity. In fact, at times it comes across as being a bit too "folksy". If you are looking for a straight-up spell book, formulary, or grimoire - this isn't it. Instead you get an appealing collection of lore, family stories, and cultural practices, with recipes, spells, and ideas spread throughout. What is especially commendable is the author's obvious love of these old ways, ways that are unfortunately dying off with the older generation and which he has helped preserve in this charming book. For those seeking authentic southern American folk magic, I highly recommend this book.Wonder working power... This book holds great information, but as you read you can tell the author has put more than just words into this book. He will take you to the hills and introduce you to his family, he will show you their ways. There were "a-ha" moments, and "wow" moments for me. He has shared his "recipes", tried and true, passed down through generations. This is a book I am sure to turn to again and again.
